Web Tip: Make Sure Your Website Works for Everybody

A lot of people don’t know this, but websites can look drastically different depending on what browser you’re using (e.g., Firefox, Internet Explorer, Safari, Chrome, etc). There are bugs and problems unique to each browser, so it’s critical to do compatibility testing.

For example…

While I was doing my standard round of testing on this recent website project for Treble Clef Education, I figured it would be a good example to illustrate my point.

Here’s how the first draft of the website looked in Firefox. No problems at all!

But here’s how it looked in Internet Explorer 7 for Windows (before I fixed the bug):

Yikes!

You can’t read the text and the site becomes unusable. Even worse, it becomes a turn-off to potential clients of TCE. Not good! The problem is caused by quirks unique to Internet Explorer 7. Even though the website’s underlying code is written perfectly, Internet Explorer interprets it wrong and puts the text overtop of the image.

And to put this in perspective…

Internet Explorer for Windows is the browser with the most problems, and it also happens to be the most popular browser in use. So if your site doesn’t work in Internet Explorer, you could be turning away a huge percentage of your potential clients.

So what do you do?

The good news is, a problem like this is often easy to fix. The bad news? (Continue Reading…)

A Brand New Blog! What’s It All About?

Thanks for coming to visit my blog. It’s brand new! I’ll be posting mostly things that are useful to artists, entrepreneurs, and other creative folks. Here’s what I’ll be writing about:

1. Tips on Getting Your Awesome Work Done

Like most artists and entrepreneurs, I’ve had to work through my own challenges with productivity, creativity, and motivation. I’ve discovered a ton of techniques that work for me, and the more I talk about them, the more I’ve noticed that people get really excited when I share what works for me. Their eyes light up and they start smiling and say, “I want to go home and work right now! I feel so inspired!”

I love helping other people get into working on their projects, and if I can help you by putting my tips on the web, then gosh darn, I’m going to put my tips on the web. Let’s do awesome stuff! I’ll let you know what works for me, and maybe it’ll work for you too.

2. Tips on Art and Design

I know you’re not all graphic designers reading here, but if you’re an artist, entrepreneur, musician, or anybody who has something to promote, I’ll be posting things that you should know about design.

Graphic design is as important to any promotional effort as wearing a decent set of clothes to a job interview. Whether you’re designing your own materials or hiring someone to do it, it’s good to have some basic knowledge, so I’ll be writing posts that are easy to understand and useful to you.

3. A Wee Bit of News About My Projects

The focus of my blog is really on the “useful stuff” posts above, but I’ll also occasionally let you know what I’m up to creatively. Don’t worry, I won’t get all long-winded and boring on you. I’ll just let you know how and what I’m doing, and what I’m learning in the process.

And last but not least…

I’ll be posting free original desktop wallpapers to cheer up your computer work space! I’ll be posting one at least every two months. If you want me to email you whenever I get a new one up, sign up for my newsletter.

Thanks for reading. I hope you’ll check back and let me know what things have been helpful to you.
